Ineffability

The term "ineffable" refers to something that is too great or extreme to explain or convey in words. In the context of dementia this can describe the difficulty of expressing or communicating the intense and sometimes unexplainable emotions, experiences, and obstacles connected with the condition.

Dementia can cause a wide range of complicated and subtle emotions in both dementia patients and their loved ones. Because of the condition's multidimensional nature, including memory loss, personality changes, and the impact on daily life, these emotions may be difficult to express. The term "ineffable" is then used to describe the depth and complexity of the emotional landscape connected with our experiences, recognising that some aspects of the experience may defy precise language expression.

STRUCTURE OF THE INSTALLATIONS

The show is an immersive experience that intertwines the installations through different audio output.

One is listened with headphones, the other with speakers.

Two short throw projectors project onto two photographic backgrounds hold by two support kit. The BKGs are set in a V shape, and in the middle sits a mini projector onto 120cm plinth displaying the main text of the exhibition on the ground

On the left bkg, a plinth in front of it, next to the projector sits 4 headphones connected to a multichannel with adj volume knobs managed by the viewer.

Behind the screens there is a V shaped stage, it is the ground of a long table and a rather ordered entanglement of cables that converge from the base of the screens to the center of the stage, under the table. On top of it a Mac with 3 connected HDMI adaptors of which one with USB plugs, and a usb sound interface connected to the headphones multi channel. From the laptop audio output plug are connected the speakers, that sits on the ground to the side of the background connected with a long Jack cable to the laptop.

STRUCTURE OF THE SHOW

The slideshow is divided into 3 workflows: for the photos some of which double exposure in camera, I have developed an editing through Lightroom and Bridge that I discussed with my mentor Mimi Mollica. For the animations I have used a software called MadMapper, used for projection mapping and visual effects. For the audio editing I have used PremierePro after browsing audio libraries in search of the right sounds effects. The loop of the shows was made possible through the use of two different media players (quick time and VLC) in loop mode

PURPOSE OF THE EXHIBITION

After working extensively on a long form photographic project about the volunteer experience with the intention to make a photo book, I reviewed the editing with photographer Mimi Mollica and I realised that there wasn’t enough photos so I decided to create an exhibition that would bring attention to the struggle of dementia to the local community and at the same time create a work that exposes my multifaceted skills to future employers.

PROFESSIONALISM and COLLABORATION

Me and Sarah worked individually on the different aspects of the exhibition establishing tasks that would fit our strengths. I was in charge of the audio visual aspect and the logistic around the equipment while she worked on promoting and advertising the exhibition and on the preparation of refreshments.

During the first stage we both worked on communication with Penryn council to hire the location.

Temperance Hall was chosen as a place easy to reach for the local community and the members of the Memory Cafe as well.

BERLIN FIELD TRIP, Humanities and Social Sciences, EXETER University

This paid experience was made possible through the connection with PHD creative writing student Elena Traina who referenced me to professor Cristiana Olcese. They were looking for a photographer and content creator to document the field trip of 3rd year politics students in Berlin. They needed daily social media presence and a photographic album to promote the Hass department and the politics programme.

Since my strong interest in video making and motion graphics I offered them the opportunity to have a professional promotional video that would help to showcase the values and strengths of the course to prospective students

I have attached some documentation of the relation with the heads of the department, luckily I have been involved with great trust that allowed me to engage in a professional way while keeping creative freedom.

Handling Guide Video for Cornish Archive Kresen Kernow

In January 2024 I began a volunteer experience as catalogue archivist in Kresen Kernow the Cornish Archive in Redruth. What driven this choice was the desire to learn more about the archives world and eventually collaborate to future designs of augmented archive to engage a wider audience.

The team at Kresen Kernow was in need of a guided video for its visitors to handle the antiques objects, as they often felt worry to treat them inappropriately.

I offered my skills and knowledge to realise it and with the collaboration of Kresen Kernow team who wrote the script and did the narrator I recorded and shot the video.

In addition I asked to be involved in the social media aspect of Kresen Kernow and I had the opportunity to create a reel that explain what I do as volunteer. This came as alternative to the limitation of create the augmented experience I aimed to.

Riccardo Imperato – Kresen Kernow student volunteer placement Handling video production

3rd May 2024

Kresen Kernow required a document handling video in order to induct new researchers and volunteers. It

would provide a basic visual introduction into correct handling procedures for different document formats,

whilst familiarising the viewer with the service. The outcome needed to look professional and on trend

with the Kresen Kernow brand and setting within the heritage sector.

As the client, I had a clear vision in terms of the content needed to be covered in this video and wrote a

script for Riccardo to use as the foundation for each scene. He listened to my requirements and took the

lead in setting up the shots, directing me to best capture the scenes. He was very particular in how to light,

stage and structure the filming process, which suited the detailed nature we needed to capture. He also

had a welcoming presence and put me at ease with the filming process.

In terms of post-production, Riccardo created the first draft, chose the background music and added in the

voice over. We discussed this draft and decided to reshoot a couple of scenes that were not quite

conveying the required message. All I can say is a huge thanks for his patience and skill at this editing

process. I am a bit of a perfectionist, and he really did fulfil every whim and request that I threw at him. His

energetic approach and suggestions also helped keep the momentum of the content flowing on what can

be a very dry subject matter. I am incredibly happy with the outcome, it looks very professional, captures

the friendly mood of the service and conveys the much-needed handling advice for new users.

The video will be made available to the public via our YouTube channel, it will be used in the volunteer

induction processes and will be directly linked into email correspondence with new researchers.

We are extremely grateful that he took the initiative to ask us about creating this video, it is something we

have needed for quite some time now but did not have the skills or set up to complete. Many thanks go to

Riccardo for sharing his time, expertise and enthusiasm.

AWOL is a self published magazine about alternative ways of life with the purpose of telling stories about people and their living and how this impact the housing crisis and the environmental crisis.

Through the collaboration with the writer Beatrice Laurora we reached out people who wanted to be part of AWOL.

AWOLmag is the videopodcast of the magazine, where each episode is dedicated to a different story. You will find the authentic voice of the people we tell in the magazine.

The making of this “magcast” was intended initially as an experimental ground where all the skills learnt in these years of university could be put together to create a body of work that reflect my values as a person and as creative. The forms and the contents was made through the application of many softwares and equipment such as Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effect, Premiere Pro and the whole variety of audio visual tools. The context of this magazine rests for now on the digital realm representing a starting point for me and my partner and writer Beatrice Laurora. As a self-published magazine we hope soon to have the chance of reaching out national and international publishers hoping to attract interest. However we set a mission for AWOL, the chance to shape public opinion about travellers communities, semi-nomadic lifestyles, volunteer effort and every other aspect of living that could design a future of active communities reducing the cost of sustainable living, improving health and education.
